Kevin Lanthier is a visual artist, commercial photographer and retoucher, and educator. He brings a strong technical foundation for digital postproduction to his creative work, building his photorealistic images from dozens, if not hundreds, of separate photographs to create scenes and convey ideas in ways not otherwise possible. His current work focuses on distilling and amplifying narratives found in urban spaces via highly controlled, concept-driven compositions, presently exploring the experience of the wildlife living amongst us in our cities. His recent exhibition series The Special examined Vancouver’s history and culture by combining separately photographed structures into hyper-real, imaginary streetscapes. It was widely exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the city. An addendum to this series, wherein the same process was applied to imagery he shot in Istanbul, was selected as a finalist for the Saltspring National Art Prize.
